Professional Experience

1999 - present Assistant Professor, University of South Carolina School of Medicine
1998-1999  Assistant Professor of Biological Sciences, University of Maine, Orono
1994-1997  Postdoctoral Research Fellow, University of Virginia

Research Interests

Dr. LaVoie’s research aims to elucidate mechanisms of multi-hormonal control of critical genes involved in ovarian cell differentiation and progesterone biosynthesis. Ongoing studies involve determining how IGF-I augments gonadotropin (FSH and LH) actions. One area of focus is the regulation of the Steroidogenic Acute Regulatory Protein (StAR) and how these hormones regulate its activation via transcription factors including GATA-4/-6, CEBP, and SF-1. Other areas of interest focus on the role of estradiol in luteal cell function. Dr. LaVoie’s laboratory uses the pig as its model system because its utilization of LDL cholesterol in the production of steroid hormones is similar to humans.
