Lance Paulman

Lance Paulman, Ph.D.

Title:

Research Associate Professor

Research:

Dr. Paulman is interested in the interaction of between developing neural tissue with extracellular matrix proteins. In particular, he is interested in the injury response of the central nervous system. As wound repair in many highly differentiated systems requires a recapitulation of developmental events, he is interested in discovering if this is true in CNS as well. Currently, he is using an organotypic hippocampal culture system in which he has characterized the postnatal expression of the ECM proteins laminin and fibronectin. These studies are being used as a basis to examine changes in the patterns of expression of these proteins following injury.   He is also characterizing the expression of the integrins, membrane-bound dimeric receptors for these ECM molecules, and determining how their patterns of expression change following trauma in this model.  He hopes that this will lead to greater understanding of the cellular events that occur following trauma in the CNS, with the aim of someday being able to apply this knowledge clinically to persons with damage to the CNS.
